Description
Arisaema griffithii, known as Griffith's cobra lily, is one of those rare plants that seems to belong to another world. Emerging in early summer, its remarkable spathe—deep purple or mossy green, heavily veined and artfully hooded—appears just above the ground like a secret slowly revealed. The dramatic form, reminiscent of a cobra ready to strike, gives this tuberous perennial an unmistakable allure. Rising to around 60cm, its two broad leaves divide into three diamond-shaped leaflets, forming a perfect canopy to frame the extraordinary bloom beneath.
In a shaded corner of the garden, Arisaema griffithii is both mysterious and mesmerising. It thrives in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil and rewards patience with a spectacularly sculptural presence. Perfect for woodland gardens or collectors of the unusual, Griffith's cobra lily pairs beautifully with ferns, trilliums and other shade lovers, creating a scene that feels half botanical, half mythical. To encounter Arisaema griffithii in flower is to witness a moment of quiet theatre—nature’s own work of art.
Griffith's cobra lily was named in honour of 19th-century botanist William Griffith, who collected many Himalayan species for Western science.
