Description
Arisaema concinnum, the Chinese cobra lily, is a plant of quiet drama and sculptural beauty. Rising to around 1.5m, its solitary, finely divided leaf arches elegantly above the forest floor, giving an impression of botanical architecture in motion. In early summer, the dark purple or green spathe unfurls like silk—hooded and sinuous, marked with fine white stripes that draw the eye inward to its mysterious core. From the spadix trails a slender tail, up to 15cm long, completing the cobra-like illusion that gives this species its evocative name.
Although exotic in appearance, Arisaema concinnum is surprisingly accommodating when given dappled shade and humus-rich soil. Its tuber sends out stolons, slowly forming a discreet colony that returns year after year with quiet assurance. Planted beneath trees or among ferns, Arisaema concinnum lends a touch of the tropics to a woodland corner, pairing beautifully with hostas and trilliums. The Chinese cobra lily is a plant for those who appreciate subtle spectacle—a touch of the extraordinary hidden in plain sight.
The common name Chinese cobra lily comes from the spathe’s hooded shape, which mimics a cobra poised to strike.
