Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.
'Robustissima'
Japanese anemone
Soft pink flowers float above a generous sweep of foliage on Anemone 'Robustissima', creating a beautifully relaxed display as summer turns to autumn. Slender, reddish stems carry open, five-petalled blooms, each around 5cm across, with delicate silvery-pink faces and a deeper rosy flush on the reverse. At the heart of each flower, golden-yellow stamens surround a fresh green centre, drawing the eye towards their simple, graceful form. The flowers arrive in loose clusters with plenty of rounded buds waiting to open, while deeply lobed green leaves create a lush backdrop below. For all its vigorous nature, Anemone 'Robustissima' has a remarkably airy appearance, especially when allowed to mingle with purple asters, white cosmos and softly waving ornamental grasses.
True to its name, Anemone tomentosa 'Robustissima' is one of the more vigorous Japanese anemones, gradually forming generous colonies once established. Growing to around 100–120cm tall, it's particularly lovely towards the back of a border or along a lightly shaded woodland edge. Choose a position in sun or partial shade, with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, and water regularly during dry spells. Its flowers continue from late summer into autumn, offering a welcome source of nectar for visiting pollinators. Give Anemone 'Robustissima' plenty of room to spread, allowing its graceful stems to weave naturally between neighbouring plants. Fully hardy and remarkably reliable, this is a perennial that becomes increasingly impressive with age. Whether planted in generous groups or allowed to establish a flowing drift, Anemone 'Robustissima' brings a wonderfully effortless sense of abundance to the late-season garden.
During the RHS Japanese anemone trials in the 1990s, renowned gardener Christopher Lloyd reportedly considered Anemone 'Robustissima' worthy of an Award of Garden Merit. His fellow judges were less enthusiastic, concerned about its vigorous spreading habit.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
