Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.
'Hadspen Abundance'
Japanese anemone
Not every petal plays by the same rules on Anemone 'Hadspen Abundance'. Its charming, cup-shaped flowers combine soft rose-pink with richer raspberry tones, often with two petals noticeably darker than their companions. Around each golden-yellow centre, the rounded petals open with an appealingly relaxed symmetry, giving the flowers an almost hand-painted appearance. They hover on slender, branching stems above a generous mound of deeply lobed, dark green leaves, lending height without heaviness. As summer gives way to autumn, the plant keeps sending up fresh blooms, bringing a lively scattering of colour to the border. Anemone 'Hadspen Abundance' is especially lovely among white Japanese anemones, purple asters and fine-textured ornamental grasses, where its contrasting pinks can be appreciated from near and far.
Discovered in an English garden, Anemone hupehensis 'Hadspen Abundance' has a wonderfully generous flowering habit that explains its name. Growing to around 80–100cm, it suits cottage-style borders, woodland edges and gently shaded spots where the soil remains reasonably moist. Its outstanding garden performance has earned Anemone 'Hadspen Abundance' the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, a reassuring distinction for this hardy, reliable perennial. Choose a position in sun or partial shade, with fertile, well-drained soil, and add mulch to help conserve moisture during dry spells. Once established, it gradually spreads into attractive clumps, so give it room to settle and avoid unnecessary disturbance. The open flowers are also attractive to pollinating insects, bringing welcome activity to the late-season garden. From its first summer buds to the final autumn flowers, Anemone 'Hadspen Abundance' offers a delightful combination of colour, movement and natural elegance.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
