The exquisitely layered petals of this Amaryllis are in the softest shade of white, with a delicate patina of light green and the subtlest hints of pink, like the most light-handed of brushstrokes. This gives the flower an intriguing and almost antique appearance. And while it forgoes the brashness of the more traditional Hippeastrum cultivars, 'White Amadeus' has kept the impact, with its large flowers on sturdy stems that will flower for several weeks.
This new and very special Amaryllis 'White Amadeus' is bound to elicit a lot of curiosity, especially as this delicate beauty can be encouraged to flower indoors in time for Christmas or a bit later in the New Year. Position your Hippeastrum bulb in a warmer spot to encourage it to come out of dormancy as soon as possible, or keep it in cooler conditions to delay flowering until February or March. Use peat-free multipurpose compost and position the bulb with its pointed end upwards. Leave the neck and upper third of the bulb above the compost.
Place the pot indoors in a warm, bright position away from direct heat. Turn it regularly as the stem grows to keep it straight.
Water lightly after planting, then sparingly until growth appears. Increase watering as the plant develops, keeping the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, but retain the flower stalk until it yellows. Continue watering and feeding while the leaves remain green to replenish the bulb.
