Part of the popular and highly-regarded Nymph series of Amaryllis developed by Dutch breeders, Hippeastrum 'Happy Nymph' will often produce several flowers atop sturdy stems. The bulbs can be forced to flower in winter indoors by growing them in pots, which is what a lot of gardeners do to satisfy that winter urge for plants and flowers! But you can also take a leaf out of tropical growers’ books, and plant outdoors in the garden once the risk of frost is past, to enjoy these sumptuous blooms in terrace pots or even in borders. Whichever option you choose, the Hippeastrum 'Happy Nymph' bulbs can be kept during dormancy and will re-bloom reliably in years to come.

Use peat-free multipurpose compost and position the bulb with its pointed end upwards. Leave the neck and upper third of the bulb above the compost.
Place the pot indoors in a warm, bright position away from direct heat. Turn it regularly as the stem grows to keep it straight.
Water lightly after planting, then sparingly until growth appears. Increase watering as the plant develops, keeping the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged.
Remove faded flowers, but retain the flower stalk until it yellows. Continue watering and feeding while the leaves remain green to replenish the bulb.
