Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.

Fall in love with the lovely lilac-coloured blooms of Alstroemeria 'Mulan'. Pale mauve petals, splashed in cream and violet are etched with mesmerising purple dashes that make a hypnotic focal point. This compact Peruvian lily will be the crowning jewel of the garden in summer, with orchid-like blooms which last from June to October, or even later in a mild autumn. The exotic-looking flowers of Alstroemeria 'Mulan' sit atop sturdy 30-40cm stems above a clump of lush green foliage. Bred to have a dwarf habit, Colorita® alstroemerias are naturally compact which makes them perfect for pots, spaces at the front of a border or exposed areas—they’re strong, long-lasting and low maintenance.
Alstroemeria Colorita® 'Mulan' is a clump forming perennial which grows back every year, the size of the clump gradually increases each year, producing a succession of flowers every summer. If you like growing your own cut flowers, you’ll find these have a good stem length and impressive vase life—they’ll add plenty of glamour to summer bouquets! Peruvian lilies enjoy a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Alstroemeria 'Mulan' is easy to grow and typically hardy to around -5°C, so give this plant a sheltered spot where it will be protected from the worst of the winter weather.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
