Allium schubertii
The otherworldly design and grace of sea anemones is echoed in the curves and lines of Allium schubertii. This is an allium like no other. Its long pedicles grow in all directions and sprout small rose-purple flowers in spring. The effect is so seductive that you’ll be choosing these for your best flower arrangements, and since they last so well in the vase, you should definitely do so. The curved leaves die as the blooms come out, but you’ll hardly notice that as you marvel at the uniqueness of this species. Make your garden an undersea escape with Allium schubertii.

Choose full sun or partial shade. Improve heavy soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. For containers, use peat-free multipurpose compost with good drainage.
Plant bulbs pointed side upwards, two to three times their own height deep. A slightly flattened side is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
Space small bulbs around 5cm apart. Larger bulbs need more room, generally around twice their own width apart, so their foliage and flowers can develop freely.
Water after planting if the soil is dry, then only when needed. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally. Decorative seedheads can remain in place.
