Unpack bare roots or rhizomes on arrival and plant them within a week. Until then, keep them somewhere cool and ensure the roots remain slightly moist, never wet.
'Poppin' Pink'
African lily
Blue and white have had the agapanthus spotlight for quite long enough. Agapanthus 'Poppin' Pink' introduces something genuinely different: generous, rounded heads of richly saturated, deep pink flowers, each made up of delicate trumpets with softer highlights. The colour is quite remarkable, particularly against its neat fountain of deep green, strap-shaped leaves. Part of the Everpanthus series, Agapanthus 'Poppin' Pink' has been bred for more than an unusual shade. Its flowers appear in abundance throughout summer, followed by a welcome second flush later in the season. At around 70cm tall and 60cm wide, this relatively compact African lily has a wonderfully balanced shape, bringing plenty of colour without demanding too much space. Agapanthus 'Poppin' Pink' might just change the way you think about African lilies.
Give Agapanthus 'Poppin' Pink' a sunny position in fertile, well-drained soil and watch those vibrant flowerheads rise above the handsome foliage. It looks particularly lovely among ornamental grasses, silver-leaved plants and softer purple perennials, while a generous patio container allows its unusual colouring to take centre stage. Once established, this resilient variety tolerates summer heat and occasional dry spells remarkably well. Winter requires a little more consideration, as it is hardy to approximately -7°C and dislikes prolonged cold, wet conditions. In colder parts of the UK, growing it in a container makes winter protection considerably easier. With a little care, Agapanthus 'Poppin' Pink' offers a long, colourful performance that proves there's still room for surprises in a familiar favourite.

Remove the packaging straight away, check the compost and water thoroughly if dry. Check the plant’s hardiness before placing it outdoors. Plant into a border or permanent container within a month, choosing the position recommended for the variety. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, firm gently and water well.
Soak the roots in water for three to six hours immediately before planting. Keep any crown, buds or emerging shoots above the water where possible.
Pot most bare roots into 15–20cm pots filled with peat-free multipurpose compost. Large or depth-sensitive roots, including peonies, are often best planted directly into borders.
Arrange the roots naturally without bending them. Cover the roots completely, positioning the crown and buds at the depth recommended for that particular perennial.
Keep pots in a sheltered outdoor position and water whenever the compost begins to dry. Grow on until roots hold the compost together when lifted from the pot.
Plant into a suitable border or permanent container once well rooted. Add a label and water regularly throughout the first growing season while the perennial establishes.
