Yuccas, commonly known as Adam’s needle, needle palm, Spanish bayonet, spineless yucca, Adam’s needle and thread or Spanish dagger, are grown for their outstanding ornamental and sculptural leaf form. As focal points within a garden, their exotic appearance really adds a touch of drama. They range in habit from bold, ground-hugging rosettes, to tall-stemmed tree-like forms. Native to dry places in North and Central America, Yuccas are well-suited to sunny seaside gardens in the UK. However, they also benefit from good drainage and shelter from cold, drying winds. Forms of Yucca filamentosa and Y. flaccida are hardy in UK gardens, whereas others (such as Y. elephantipes, which is often sold as a houseplant) can be grown outdoors in cool temperate gardens, provided adequate winter shelter and good drainage are provided. Some yuccas have stiff leaves with razor-sharp needles at the tips. Avoid planting these too close to a pathway, because such leaves will catch you! Yucca 'Bright Edge' has spikes that are less sharp, so this form can be planted pretty much anywhere in the garden.
