Indoor-flowering bulbs

Some of the best bulbs for growing indoors are amaryllis (Hippeastrum), prepared hyacinths and paperwhite narcissi. These are particularly suited to indoor flowering and can produce impressive displays during autumn and winter. Prepared hyacinths have been specially treated for earlier flowering, while amaryllis can be brought into growth without the prolonged chilling required by many traditional spring bulbs.

For Christmas flowers, most indoor bulbs need to be planted during autumn, but the exact timing depends on the type and variety. Prepared hyacinths are generally planted from September or early October, while amaryllis are commonly planted in October. Paperwhite narcissi can flower within several weeks of planting, so timing can be adjusted according to when you want the display. Flowering dates are never completely exact because temperature and growing conditions affect development.

Prepared bulbs have been temperature-treated so they can be encouraged to flower earlier than they naturally would outdoors. Prepared hyacinths are the best-known example and are commonly grown indoors for winter and Christmas displays. This treatment has already provided part of the cool period the bulbs need, making it easier to bring them into flower indoors ahead of their normal spring season.

Plant indoor bulbs in peat-free compost or suitable bulb fibre, following the planting depth required by the particular type. Use a container with drainage holes where possible and position bulbs with their growing points upwards. Several bulbs of the same type can often be grouped together for a fuller display, but avoid allowing the bulbs to touch one another or the sides of the container.

Many spring-flowering bulbs need a cool period before they can be brought into flower indoors, but not every indoor bulb is treated in the same way. Prepared hyacinths still need a cool rooting period after planting, while amaryllis (Hippeastrum) does not need chilling and can be placed in warm conditions to begin growing. Always follow the instructions for the particular bulb rather than applying one method to every type.

Water indoor bulbs carefully, keeping the growing medium lightly moist rather than wet. Check pots regularly and water when the compost begins to dry, allowing excess moisture to drain away. Containers without drainage holes need particular care because bulbs can rot if water collects around them. Once bulbs are actively growing and flowering, they generally require more frequent checking.

Once they are ready for active growth, most indoor-flowering bulbs prefer a bright position away from excessive heat. Avoid placing them directly above radiators, as very warm conditions can encourage rapid growth and shorten the flowering display. Hyacinths in particular perform well in a well-lit, relatively cool room, while amaryllis appreciates warmth and good light while developing.

Flowering time varies considerably between bulbs. Prepared hyacinths, paperwhite narcissi and amaryllis can all flower within a matter of weeks, but the exact period depends on the variety, temperature and stage of preparation. Amaryllis typically takes around ten weeks from planting, while individual prepared hyacinth varieties have their own cooling and growing requirements. If you are aiming for flowers on a particular date, plant with some flexibility rather than expecting an exact flowering day.
