Plant anemones in autumn or spring, depending on when they are supplied. Plant them during the same season, as prolonged storage can reduce their vigour.
Familiarity doesn’t always breed contempt. You will certainly be familiar with the poppy-like flowers of the Anemone coronaria 'De Caen', but there’s no way you would ever feel contempt. These gorgeous, colourful cup-shaped blooms that emerge in a host of shades ranging from the pale to the rich and the red to the mauve, will instead provide nothing short of delight in mid to late spring. Anemone coronaria 'De Caen' or mixed garden anemones bloom year after year in your garden, filling your landscape with an array of colour. But that’s only if you can resist cutting these lovely poppy anemone flowers for a colourful bouquet indoors.

Soak them in plain water for two to three hours before planting. This rehydrates them and helps to encourage strong, even growth.
Choose a sheltered position in sun or partial shade with rich, well-drained soil. For containers, use a good-quality peat-free multipurpose compost.
Plant 2–5cm deep and 5–10cm apart, placing them on their sides. Planting in informal groups creates the most natural-looking display.
Water after planting and keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy. In colder areas, protect autumn plantings from hard frost or start them in pots under cover.
