Description
Thalictrum 'Thundercloud' rumbles into action in summer with a thundery cumulus of purple blooms. But, this cloud has no intention of dampening the mood—it's beautifully soft, elegantly dark and goes down a storm in a mixed planting scheme. A mist of deep purple-pink fluffy flowers form a haze, held up by fine, wiry stems above delicate scalloped leaves. It’s such details that make this French meadow-rue a blessing in the border, introducing interesting textures and a rich colour which contrasts beautifully with its plant neighbours.
If you have soil with a high clay content, Thalictrum 'Thundercloud' will be happy in it. Whilst you should not plant bare roots directly into clay soils, once they’re potted and have been grown on you can plant them out and you'll find that they soon settle in. There's no need to worry about this resilient perennial in winter because it can tolerate temperatures down to -20°C. Over time, Thalictrum aquilegiifolium 'Thundercloud' forms a clump, which gradually grows larger as the years go by.

Useful information
-
Soak the Thalictrum 'Thundercloud' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "French meadow-rue" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
