Description
Also known as the pink pineapple lily, Eucomis 'Pink Gin' is a tasty exotic plant for the mid- to late-summer garden! Stout spires, comprising masses of star-shaped pink and purple-pink flowers, light up the garden. The flowers, which remain open for a long time, start off as decorative red buds. The spires also have the characteristic pineapple top—consisting of a cluster of leaf-like bracts. Blooms are followed in autumn by attractive seed heads. The strap-shaped leaves are glossy and bright green, with wavy edges!
Eucomis 'Pink Gin' gives a showy display in the border, or it can be grown as a pot plant. It grows best in full sun, but it tolerates part-shade very well. Cut flowers last a long time in water, too. Growing from bulbs, this pink Eucomis may be left in the ground all year round—if you live in an area with mild winters. However, it would be advisable to apply a mulch in autumn, to protect the overwintering bulbs from frost. Alternatively, lift the Eucomis 'Pink Gin' bulbs in autumn and keep them in frost-free conditions over the winter.
