Description
With its slender petals and elongated stamen, the rich, salmon-pink Hippeastrum 'Sumatra' is an especially graceful form of this winter-flowering indoor plant. With each bulb capable of producing two stems each bearing 4-6 huge red and green-ish cream flowers (and we do mean huge—up to 15cm across!), amaryllis must surely win the prize for ‘minimum input, maximum output’.
Amaryllis (or to be botanically accurate, Hippeastrum), is fantastically easy to grow, and for most impressive results we always recommend planting three Hippeastrum 'Sumatra' bulbs together in a pot. Simply use a tight-fitting container filled with a gritty compost mix, and make sure the head and shoulders of the bulbs remain above soil level. Water freely when in growth and treat to a fortnightly liquid feed. Given a bright spot in indirect sunlight, Hippeastrum 'Sumatra' will bloom for weeks, even months throughout the gloomiest part of the year. You will wonder how you ever got through winter without it!
