Description
Also known as the Dragon Arum or Dragon Lily, these fiery lilies have a real air of fantasy and drama about them – from May onwards, Dracunculus vulgaris’s huge red blooms will blast through your borders with an almighty boom! With massive carmine hooded spathes and a long, black central ‘finger’ (spadix), this mysterious, shady number is bound to make a bold statement and will make itself a firm favourite whether you have a gothic streak or not!
This fierce-looking plant certainly is one for adding a bit of dark charm and it’s definitely got the looks reminiscent of a fantasy creature. This dragon’s bark is worse than its bite though – aside from its foliage which can cause irritation if touched (or eaten), it’s actually quite friendly and provides amazing, exotic looks which are a real talking point in the garden. Dranunculus vulgaris is mostly hardy but would appreciate a thick mulch to protect it in winter, plus it likes a sunny spot with rich, moist soil in which to bask.
