"Giant Himalayan Lily"

Good for cutting

Perfect for pots

Loved by pollinators

Hand packed in paper bags

Hardy throughout the UK

Also known as the Giant Himalayan or -Yunnan Lily, this is an unusual lily, producing a high flowering spike of scented cream-white flowers, each with maroon markings in its deep throat. Cardiocrinum giganteum produce their flowering spikes between June and August, with more than 20 (and sometimes as many as 40) individual flowers on each stalk. The blooms also have a strong vanilla-like fragrance!

Originally from the Himalayas and southwestern China, Cardiocrinum bulbs have a monocarpic habit, which means that they die after flowering – but that’s not the end of the story because large numbers of offset bulbs are formed around the base of the old stem, and seedlings appear nearby too, to grow and flower again. This could take three to five years but will be worth the wait as you’ll have many more plants, and the flowering display will be phenomenal. You may need to move the offset or seedling plants – ideally in the autumn – to give them room to develop.

The toothed seed pods and stalks of this giant lily dry wonderfully and will mystify all who are unfamiliar with it!
