Description

A recently introduced hardy perennial phlox cultivar, Phlox 'Blind Lion' is sure to be a talking point, a curiosity, and a plant coveted by all who see it. It is a compact, upright plant—but the thing that separates it from nearly all other phloxes is that the flowers remain in the bud stage. They don’t fully open—yet they have a delicate fragrance! They are dark purple to black, and are surrounded by bracts of a similar shade. The foliage is dark and lush, too. Even better, the flowers—or buds—remain constantly attractive on the plant for six to 10 weeks in summer. We don’t know of any other Phlox paniculata cultivar to have this endearing characteristic.

Phlox 'Blind Lion'was discovered in The Netherlands in 2011, almost by accident, growing on a nursery. It was surrounded by numerous named—and other as yet unnamed—Phlox paniculata cultivars, so its parentage is unknown.

It has been said that Phlox paniculata 'Blind Lion' is a Phlox for anyone who doesn’t like Phlox! It is also highly popular with flower arrangers, as its cut-flowers have a long vase-life.
