Almost any species of nerine will make a charming addition to your garden with loads of rarity value and superb blooms, but of all the species within this very unique genus, Nerine sarniensies takes the crown. Whereas most nerines are subtle and delicate-looking, Nerine sarniensies (or Guernsey Lily) refuses to be overlooked. Tall umbels with up to 15 flowers rise from the handsome, strap-like foliage, flaunting their curly, glittering petals in a striking display of intense colour!

The plant has a colourful history too. For many years, people believed that it naturally came from Guernsey, but it is a South African plant with a very limited distribution, and nobody is quite sure how it became a Guernsey specialty. Some say it was washed ashore after a shipwreck more than three hundred years ago, but this may merely be a legend. South African horticulturists are green with envy at Farmer Gracy’s nerine bulb find. In its country of origin, growers struggle to find viable seed and must wait for years to obtain a flowering-size Nerine sarniensies bulb. But UK gardeners can now can simply plant them and enjoy those blooms.
