Description
Enjoy speedier results with Agapanthus umbellatus XXL! These African lilies are supplied as well-established clumps which are ready and raring to grow—plant one of these satisfyingly chunky clumps straight out into pots or sunny borders and you’ll be soaking up a wash of blue each summer when they burst into bloom. Agapanthus can take time to settle in but clumps like these are quicker to establish and will soon look like they've been growing in the garden for years. Depending on planting location, conditions and how early in the season you plant them, you may even enjoy some blooms in the first year!
This classic variety is loved for its long-lasting umbels of cool blue flowers on strong, upright stems in the height of summer. They’re reliable and easy to grow in any sun-trap location and quite like having their roots restricted too, which makes that a great choice not only for borders but also for a narrow spot along a south-facing wall and patio containers. If you like picking fresh flowers from the garden to make bouquets, Agapanthus umbellatus XXL produce some fantastic stems for a tall vase!

Useful information
-
Soak the Agapanthus umbellatus 'XXL' roots in water for 3-6 hours prior to planting
Plant your "African lily" bare roots into temporary pots with a multipurpose compost in spring and grow-on in a sheltered spot outdoors
Choose a pot which comfortably fits the bare roots. Some have a noticeable crown which should be just below the soil surface with any top growth exposed. Some varieties are a length of root which should be planted lengthways and shallowly (1-2cm deep).
Plant out into borders or permanent containers in late spring or early summer once in full growth. Choose a position in sun or shade depending on the variety.
